There was a lot of talk about money in Washington last week and in particular whether the government could afford to fund some big-ticket items in health care like comprehensive reform and a pay fix for physicians. The high cost of a permanent Medicare pay fix has kept doctors just on the edge of steep pay cuts for years, but usually Congress steps in with a temporary fix at the last moment. This time around Congress was too late.
