The Escalator of Laughs

There’s nothing funny about renal disease, but if they stop to listen, clinicians attending this year’s annual meeting of the American Society of Nephrology in Denver have the opportunity to enjoy a laugh or two.

Here, when you ride the escalator down from the second floor to the main lobby of the Colorado Convention Center, taped sounds of men and women laughing emanate from speakers embedded in the escalator floor, the brainchild of artist Jim Green. Seriously! It’s like your own TSA screening area, and it sounds like this.

Are they laughing at you? With you? For you? It’s hard to say, but it’s funny to watch how people react. Some start laughing themselves. Others check their zippers. It’s a nice reminder to crack a smile now and then.
